I have always brought up the topic of divide within cyberspace in my last couple of blogs. Emphasizing on social media. This chapter brings that all together. Gandy talks about the social status and income of people has effect on their cyber use through social media.
No matter of ones income or social status, technology is high on everyones list to be up to date on. I watch this show on Netflix called Sense 8. There was a scene of one of the main characters who lives in Kenya. He does not make much money but has a big flat screen television in his room. He had a visitor from a girl and she asked how come "people from the slums have such large TV's? His response was "because it takes you out of the slum." I thought this was brilliant. Technology is growing everyday and it helps people escape.
But in regards to the digital divide, the chapter talks about the divide within class and race and connects it to how people on either side of a divide where they gain advantage from social media. I use social media religiously and never thought that I benefited from it. Now that i think about it I do in some ways, such as news, staying in touch with friends etc. Some people do not have that "luxury". Even though it was stated that low income homes will still be up to date on the latest phone or television screen. I think it is how the technology is utilized that brings a divide with people.
